“Why Didn’t I Think Of That?”

New Adirondack hiking guide offers a better way to identify the view

WEBSTER, NY - A unique new hiking guide—“Thatcher’s Peak Finder for the Northern Adirondacks”—was made public today on the website www.AdirondackPeakFinders.com.

“There are lots of great hiking guides for the Adirondacks”, said Thatcher Hogan, designer of Thatcher’s Peak Finders, “But when you reach the summits and overlooks one question still remains: What are we looking at?”

Thatcher’s Peak Finders answer that question. Small enough to fit in your day pack, Thatcher’s Peak Finders feature a sturdy plastic rivet that holds the entire deck of line drawings together, allowing individual pages to simply rotate out of the deck like the blade of your favorite pocket knife. The pages’ detailed drawings are created from original photography shot specifically for each peak, so they represent what hikers will typically see without binoculars, and without distortion. Visit www.AdirondackPeakFinders.com to see pictures of the Peak Finder and sample pages.

Thatcher’s Peak Finder for the Northern Adirondacks covers ten popular day-hike mountains in the northern Adirondacks, including Whiteface, Cascade, Ampersand and St. Regis (see below for the full list). The views cover almost 10,000 square miles of mountains, lake, and rivers, including 40 of the historic Adirondack High Peaks. Almost 200 other peaks and landmarks are also identified.

“Our Peak Finder ‘s design has gone through several changes as it evolved over the past two years,” said Hogan. “The overall size and rounded corners, and the paper weight and tension of the rivet have all been tweaked to make Thatcher’s Peak Finders more packable and easy to use. The hikers we’ve worked with love it.”

“The choice of mountains for this particular Peak Finder also changed as the project grew. Of all the wonderful views to include, these ten mountains were chosen because they are very popular and enjoyed by hikers of all ages. Whether you are a new visitor to the Adirondacks or an old friend of these mountains, we think you’ll be surprised and delighted by what you can see from their summits.”

The ten peaks in Thatcher’s Peak Finder for the Northern Adirondacks are:
• Ampersand Mountain
• Azure Mountain (with an historic fire tower)
• Baker Mountain
• Cascade Mountain (Adirondack High Peak #36)
• Haystack Mountain (near McKenzie Mountain)
• Jenkins Mountain
• Mt. Arab (with an historic fire tower)
• Owls Head Mountain (in northern Franklin County)
• St. Regis Mountain, and
• Whiteface Mountain (Adirondack High Peak #5).
Whiteface Mountain’s summit and 360º view is also accessible via the Whiteface Memorial Highway,
     weather permitting.

Thatcher’s Peak Finder for the Northern Adirondacks measures 8.5” x 2.75” x 25” thick (216 x 70 x 6 mm) closed, and weighs just 3 oz. (85 g). Printed on heavy paper stock, it is clear coated for better water resistance and easy to use—even in the wind and cold. The Adirondack High Peaks that can be seen in each view are also highlighted with their height and historic rank.
